Fuengirola, where the whole world finds its place under the sun

There are cities defined by their monuments, others by their gastronomy, and others by their history. Fuengirola is defined by its people, or more precisely, by the extraordinary diversity of its people. More than 140 different nationalities live together in the town, the largest communities after the Spanish being British, Finnish, Moroccan, Swedish and Italian residents. This is not just an anecdotal fact, it is the key to understanding the unique character of this Costa del Sol municipality, a city where hearing five different languages during a single walk along the promenade is completely ordinary.

Each of these communities has its own reasons for choosing Fuengirola. Reasons which, interestingly enough, say as much about the countries they come from as about the place they have arrived in.

The British: from grey skies to permanent terrace living

The British are the largest foreign community in Fuengirola, with more than 5,500 registered residents. Their presence on the Costa del Sol dates back to the 1960s and has remained remarkably strong, not even Brexit having managed to fully erode it. The contrast with their home country is perhaps the strongest reason: the United Kingdom offers quality of life, but also a climate that imposes limitations for eight or nine months of the year. In Fuengirola, life happens outdoors, on terraces, at the beach. The pub still exists and thrives, but it now shares its importance with the beach bar and the Sunday street market, which many regular visitors say rivals Madrid’s famous El Rastro. The British have found here an affordable Mediterranean version of a lifestyle that has become increasingly difficult to sustain in their own country, especially after retirement.

The Finns: a colony within the city

The Finnish presence in Fuengirola is one of the most unique sociological phenomena in all of Spain. Around 4,500 Finns are officially registered in the town, but the Finnish Embassy estimates that the floating population on the Costa del Sol reaches between 25,000 and 30,000 people. The district of Los Pacos, in the northern part of the city, is popularly known as “Little Finland”: its streets feature Finnish newspapers, dental clinics with bilingual signs, cafés serving cinnamon rolls, a Lutheran church and even a school whose academic performance has been ranked among the best in Spain according to the PISA report.

Finland is a country of extreme winters, prolonged darkness and temperatures that can drop below minus twenty degrees Celsius across much of the territory in January. Escaping south during the colder months is nothing new, but in Fuengirola this movement has taken on an almost institutional dimension. What began as seasonal tourism has, in many cases, evolved into permanent residency. Between October and March, large numbers of retired Finns settle in the town, helping many hotels and restaurants remain open during the low season. In that sense, their economic impact on Fuengirola is as real as that of any industrial activity.

The Swedes: sun, sea and shared quality of life

The Swedish community is the fourth largest foreign group in Fuengirola, with nearly 2,000 registered residents. Their profile is very similar to that of the Finns: a developed country with a high standard of living, but also a climate that makes the Mediterranean almost irresistible. Sweden has spectacular landscapes and public services among the best in Europe, but its summers are short and its winters long and dark. Fuengirola offers exactly what Stockholm or Gothenburg cannot provide: guaranteed sunshine, accessible beaches, generous gastronomy and a significantly lower cost of living. Many Swedes combine both worlds, spending several months in Spain while maintaining their ties to the north.

The Moroccans: the opposite shore

The Moroccan community is the third largest in number, with almost 2,800 registered residents. Their presence follows a different logic from that of northern European visitors: they are not seeking sunshine, which they already have, but employment opportunities and a standard of living that North Africa still cannot provide under the same conditions. Morocco lies less than an hour away by ferry from Algeciras, making the Costa del Sol a nearby destination where gradual integration into local society has taken place. Fuengirola’s Moroccan community already has decades of history, with its own businesses, cultural associations and a level of integration clearly reflected in everyday city life. Their contribution to local gastronomy, commerce and services forms an essential part of Fuengirola’s urban fabric.

The Italians: the south recognising the south

Italians account for nearly 1,500 residents and represent a different profile from northern European tourists. Italy already has its own Mediterranean, its own sunshine and its own world-famous gastronomy. So what does an Italian find in Fuengirola that they do not already have at home? The most common answer combines economic factors, since the cost of living on the Costa del Sol can be lower than in many Italian cities, with a quality of life that includes modern infrastructure, safety and a social atmosphere that Italians immediately recognise and appreciate because it feels familiar. Fuengirola’s Mediterranean atmosphere feels natural to someone from Naples or Sicily, but with the added attraction of novelty and a property market that, until only a few years ago, still offered highly competitive prices.
